The Leaders of the California State Legislature say they've cut as much as they possibly can from the proposed state budget, and therefore they need to raise your taxes. So why does the Senate version of the proposed budget include $5,400,000 to support research on labor and employment and labor education throughout the University of California system? This portion of the budget is referring to the University of California Miguel Contreras Labor Institute, a training center for labor unions. This "institute" was founded in 2000 in the state budget at the request of the California Labor Federation. It has produced "studies" with taxpayer funds to promote union Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) on public works construction. It has sent union organizers to merit shop companies.Should taxpayers be paying for this kind of activity? If the legislature isn't cutting this program, how serious can it really be about spending cuts?
