I'm curious about what those of you that perform residential work think about home improvement licensing requirements? I don't know how it works outside of New York, but in New York a home improvement contractor needs to be licensed in every area that he works. Usually this means that the contractor must have a license from each county he works in but some smaller municipalities also have their own licensing requirements. I understand the reasoning and need behind the licensing requirement but believe that the fact that each county issues its own license creates more harm than good and puts an unecessary restraint on contractors business. I think a statewide license makes more sense. If someone wants to do work in a neighboring county he should not have to wait 4 months to obtain a license in that county. What are the licensing requirements in other States like?
